The lights glowed bright
In every colour of the rainbow
The smell of caramel popcorn
Wafted on every breeze that would blow
And over the din of families laughing and children playing
The carnival music played on
As if it were saying,
“Come in, stay for a while, listen to our song”

I was shy at first
Not knowing what to do or say
But then that smile burst
Across your face, and I knew it would be okay
We laughed, as we played
Almost every game
To win the prizes arrayed
Though they all looked the same

Finally, we got to the giant wheel
And as the ride jerked to a start
You grabbed my hand for support
Though it was me, with the pounding heart
The ride paused at the top
As they so often do
Though I didn’t mind the chilling wind
And the hair raising view
For I couldn’t take my eyes off you.

We kissed, and it was like cotton candy
Light, airy, sweet, overpowering
And I wanted more.
I felt on top of the world
Not a care for what else was in store.

To this day, when I hear that song
I still recall
The taste of cotton candy
And the beauty of it all.
